Research Interests
Multiphase Reactors
Multiphase reactors are widely used in chemical process industries. One such multiphase reactor is inverse fluidized bed where
solid particles lighter than liquid are fluidized by a downward flow of liquid with the gas flowing counter currently upwards.
Inverse fluidized bed offers higher mass transfer rates and finds main usage in waste water treatment. Our research interest
has been to experimentally study the hydrodynamic characteristics of two and three phase inverse fluidized beds under steady and
unsteady state conditions. The objective has been to understand the mechanism of bed expansion and to study the temporal
response of the bed to dynamic changes in liquid and/or gas flow rate.
Computational Fluid Dynamics
The tool of Computational Fluid
Dynamics plays an important role in understanding the transport characteristics of multiphase reactors. Our interest is to use
CFD to simulate the steady and unsteady state characteristics of inverse fluidized bed and to compare with experimental results
and also with simulation results of other hierarchically lower non-CFD hydrodynamic models.
Stochastic Simulation
Stochastic simulation methods like Monte Carlo technique find major applications in computational physics and chemistry. Our interest has been to apply Monte Carlo techniques to fluid-particle systems to predict their hydrodynamic characteristics and compare the results with those obtained experimentally and other simulation techniques.
