Arcot R. Balakrishnan
Professor
Dr. A.R. Balakrishnan is a Professor of Chemical
Engineering at the Indian Institute
of Technology Madras, Chennai, India. He received his B.Tech
degree from the University of Madras, in 1972, and his
M.A.Sc., and Ph.D degrees from the University of
Waterloo
, Canada in 1974 and 1977, respectively. From 1976 to
1978 he worked as a Research Engineer, Waterloo Research
Institute, Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. From 1978
to 1986, he was Manager (Technical), Arbitech Polymerics
Pvt. Ltd., Chennai, India and from 1986 to 1988 Consulting
Engineer, (on retainer to FICHTNER (India), BHEL, Hyderabad),
India. From 1988 to 1993 Assistant Professor, 1993 to 1995
Associate Professor, and since 1995 Professor, Chemical Engineering
Department, Indian Institute of Technology Madras. He was the Head
of the Chemical Engineering Department from 2003 to 2006.
He is a Fellow
of the Indian National Academy of Engineering.
Research Interests
The primary focus of Prof.
Balakrishnan's recent research work has been directed
towards addressing the concerns
of energy and the environment. This includes
among other work energy storage,
liquid desiccant dehumidification of air
and gases, augmentation of boiling heat transfer
using enhanced surfaces, boiling of multicomponent
liquid mixtures, separation of liquid mixtures
using new membrane techniques.
