Research

The focus is on basic and applied research in the field of mass transfer. The thrust is on experimental research accompanied by mathematical modelling and process simulation. Specifically the areas of current focus are

a. Process Intensification of Mass Transfer Processes:

Detailed study on the means and mechanisms of enhancement of mass transport in solid dissolution, extraction, and absorption processes. The focus is on the experimental study ,modelling and verification of the phenomena responsible for the enhancement. Mass transfer with chemical reaction and applications of acoustic cavitation are currently being studied.

b. Enhanced Distillation Processes:

The focus is on accurate process simulation and development of methodologies for analysis of actual operating columns. The research efforts are directed towards the following areas

  • Simulation of multistage multicomponent processes through rigorous mass transfer models.
  • Reactive distillation
  • Analysis of multiple steady states in azeotropic distillation processes.
  • Development of user friendly simulation software based on object oriented modelling and
  • Design principles.

  • c. Hydrodynamic and Mass Transfer Studies in Packed Towers:

Experimental studies on the analysis of holdup, pressure drop and mass transfer performance of packed towers. Acid gas absorption is currently being studied.
